Platho and the New Telegram Wallet: What Links the TON-Based Messenger to Durov's Plans
Rumors about a new messaging app have surfaced on Telegram channels within the TON ecosystem Platho, built around a blockchain, a GRAM wallet, and its own token, ATH. Interest in the project surged after an address appeared in it 6895.ton, which is linked to Pavel Durov. But the timeline turned out to be much more interesting: the development of Platho began as far back as May 19, 2026 — before Toncoin was renamed Gram and before the public announcement of the native Gram Wallet for more than a billion Telegram users. We took a closer look at the Platho app and the story behind its development, and tried to figure out whether this new messaging app might be connected to Telegram and TON’s future plans.
A messaging app where your account is your wallet
Platho is already up and running. As of August 20, the app shows version 1.1.2 and is not just a demo prototype, but offers a fairly extensive set of features: private messages, public channels, posts, comments, a built-in GRAM wallet, its own ATH token, .ath-names, support .ton-Domains and wallet recovery using a seed phrase.
The main difference between Platho and a typical messaging app lies not in the interface, but in its architecture. It doesn’t follow the usual model, in which a user first registers an account on the server and then, if desired, connects a crypto wallet. In Platho, the wallet actually serves as the foundation of the account.
When a user writes a private message, it is encrypted right on their device. The encrypted message is sent over the network, and the recipient’s app then retrieves it from TON and decrypts it locally. This system does not require a separate centralized storage location where all user correspondence is stored in plain text.
This also leads to an unusual limitation. Once data is recorded on the blockchain, it cannot simply be deleted or overwritten, unlike a message in a regular messaging app. For private conversations on the network, an encrypted record remains, while public posts are designed from the outset to be stored permanently.
In other words, it is more accurate to view Platho not as “just another Telegram,” but as an attempt to build a communication app in which blockchain is used simultaneously as a transport layer, an identity layer, and a financial layer.
And this is where the project’s launch date becomes interesting.
Platho had already started developing the Telegram wallet before it was announced
According to Platho's development history, the first changes to the project were made on May 19, 2026.
As of August 20, only 93 days had passed since that date. During this period, the repository's history has recorded more than a thousand changes. The published repository data shows 1,085 commits, work on 75 different days, and a record of 63 commits in a single day.
If we recalculate these figures, we get a fairly high rate: development took place on approximately 81% of all days since the project's inception. On average, that's about 11.7 commits per calendar day, or roughly 14.5 commits per day of actual work.
The project itself is already quite extensive. The repository data lists about 2,000 files, including several dozen contract files, more than 270 test files, and approximately 500 application files.
All changes appear under a single name, so it’s impossible to tell from a single Git commit history whether Platho is actually being developed by a single person. A single commit may come from one person, several developers, a shared account, or part of an automated process. But for a project that’s only about three months old, the pace of development is impressive in any case.
These figures alone don't tell us anything about Platho's connection to Telegram. What's far more interesting is this: on May 19, the project already existed, while the major public events surrounding GRAM and Telegram's new wallet took place later.
After 13 days, TON began converting back into Gram
On June 1, voting began on TON to restore the network’s native currency to its original name, Gram. The vote lasted until June 8 and concluded with 81.22% in favor of the renaming. On June 15, the change officially took effect: the blockchain remained The Open Network, but Toncoin was renamed Gram and given the ticker GRAM. No coin swap or contract migration was required for this.
It turns out that development of Platho began just 13 days before voting started and 27 days before the actual transition from TON to GRAM.
This, in and of itself, could still be explained as a mere coincidence. The return of the name "Gram" did not change the blockchain's architecture, and plans for TON's development had been discussed long before June.
But the next date looks much more interesting.
On July 21, 63 days after the start of Platho’s development, Pavel Durov announced that Telegram plans to integrate a native, non-custodial Gram Wallet into all of its apps. He called it the largest deployment of a non-custodial crypto wallet in history and spoke of instant, commission-free transactions for an audience of over a billion users.
This is exactly where a simple explanation stops working.
Platho couldn't have emerged as a reaction to Durov's July announcement—by that point, the project had already been in development for two months.
What's more, by July 21, about two-thirds of its entire history to date had already passed.
This does not prove that Platho's developers knew about Telegram's plans in advance. But it does make the timeline intriguing enough to view both projects as more than just completely separate events.
What exactly is Telegram planning to do?
Telegram already has a Wallet that millions of people use. But Durov's announcement concerns a different level of integration.
The wording was specific: “a native non-custodial Gram wallet for every Telegram app.” In other words, this refers to a wallet built directly into the Telegram client and designed so that the user retains control of their own keys.
If this wallet does indeed become a core feature of Telegram, the scope of this change will be much greater than simply the addition of another button for buying cryptocurrency.
Today, a Telegram user primarily has a Telegram account. The wallet is an additional feature. But if more than a billion users receive their own non-custodial TON address directly within the app, the ecosystem gains an entirely different foundation.
This address can be used for more than just GRAM transfers. It can simultaneously serve as an identifier, a means of authentication, a payment method, and an access key for third-party applications.
This is exactly the kind of architecture you can already see at Platho.
There, users don't create a regular account and then link a wallet to it. The wallet serves as the starting point around which the profile, name, and communication are built.
That is why Platho is interesting even if its developers have absolutely no connection to Durov.
It demonstrates what can be built on top of TON if a crypto wallet ceases to be a standalone app and becomes a digital account.
And then a second token appears
Platho already has its own economy.
In addition to GRAM, the app uses a token ATH. It is needed for .ath-names and certain actions within the system. In other words, the project uses two layers simultaneously: GRAM is responsible for the underlying blockchain and transactions, while ATH creates a separate internal economy for the application itself.
That's exactly why the story about 6895.ton turned out to be so sensitive to the ATH market.
The logic is very simple: an address linked to Durov appeared on Platho; therefore, Platho may be linked to Durov; if Platho is linked to Durov, ATH could turn out to be valuable.
The problem is that there is a huge unproven step between each of these statements.
The appearance of a single wallet in the app does not confirm Telegram's involvement, Durov's involvement, or—much less—the token's future value.
Platho itself has never publicly identified itself as a Telegram product. Durov has also not announced Platho or presented it as part of his strategy.
Therefore, for now, there is only a set of events that happen to be very close together in time.

What if Platho isn't just a random project related to TON, but actually part of the final MTONGA structure?
There is no direct evidence of a connection to Durov yet. But too many things point in the same direction: TON has been accelerated, fees have been lowered, Gram has been brought back, Telegram is preparing a native wallet for a billion users—and almost simultaneously, a working app has appeared where the wallet is no longer just an add-on, but the user’s account itself.
If Telegram is indeed giving away a billion native TON wallets, then this could mean much more than just GRAM transfers. A billion wallets means a billion ready-made identifiers, accounts, and entry points into the new ecosystem.
So TON’s next big step isn’t the wallet itself, but the apps built on top of it. They don’t need to create their own accounts, a separate payment system, or re-verify the user’s identity. A user simply arrives with their TON wallet—and that’s all it takes to use the service.
And Platho provides a suspiciously good illustration of what such a model might look like in practice.
I’m not claiming that Durov is behind it or that Platho is an official phase of MTONGA. But if the final phase of MTONGA does indeed involve converting Telegram accounts into full-fledged TON accounts, then Platho may not turn out to be a “second messenger.”
